On the 14th October 1873, a group referred to as “the committee of visitors elected...on behalf of the county of Somerset, to represent the Pauper Lunatic Asylum erected for the sole purpose of the said county”, paid the sum of £400 for “one close of meadow or pasture land...at a place called Broadstone”. This land, lying just off the Bath Road in Wells, is now maintained by volunteers as a nature reserve by The Friends of Mendip Hospital Cemetery.

The aims of the Friends of Mendip Hospital Cemetery charity are:

“To preserve and protect the former Mendip Hospital Cemetery site and enhance the site as a public amenity and to maintain, repair, restore, preserve, improve, beautify and reconstruct the fabric of the Chapel at the former Mendip Hospital Cemetery site as a place of historical or architectural merit and to advance public education in the history of the Mendip Hospital, the Chapel and the Cemetery”.

There is an annotated display of historic photographs, maps and plans of the Mendip Hospital, in the cemetery chapel.

Everyone is welcome to visit the cemetery when it is open, usually from 10.00am to 4.00pm. On dates shown on the Friends of Mendip Hospital Cemetery a team of Friends will be working in the grounds and any additional volunteers will be warmly welcome.
