This year, in recognition of the centenary of the Universal Suffrage Act, our HODs events in Wells aim to incorporate the national HODs theme of ‘Extraordinary Women’ – focusing on both well-known and less celebrated women.
Wells Town Hall will have displays on “Women’s Suffrage in Wells”, “Women’s Firsts in Wells”, “Women at the Wells Charter Fairs”, and a selection of Wells women from history (including a montage of Phillips portraits). A suffrage playlet with a unique link to the city, “A Chat with Mrs Chicky”, will be performed. The stunning Millennium Tapestry, created by a group of local women embroiderers, will be exhibited.
Mendip Hospital Cemetery will be featuring some of their extraordinary women (patients and staff) in a special display in the chapel.
During both weekends there will be displays and activities focusing on Extraordinary Women and Forgotten Women in St Cuthbert’s Church. These will include the women saints honoured in the reredoses.
At Wells Cathedral, two special tours will be running, each of which will have a link to remarkable local women who have contributed to the Cathedral's fabric and history. One of these women was instrumental in the Cathedral's amazing embroideries.
Wells Walking Tours are offering a tour around parts of Wells that were of particular interest in 1918 with special mention of some of the women of the era.
Wells & Mendip Museum is offering free access to a very special example from the Museum’s sampler collection, created by a young girl.
At The Bishop’s Palace, there will be special tour entitled “Swans, Bells and the Girl whoStarted a Wonderful Tradition”.
