The Wells Museum was founded by Herbert Balch in 1893. He was a naturalist, caver and geologist who pioneered many of the techniques used by modern cavers. Balch’s fine collection of local artefacts and memorabilia form the core of the museum’s displays, which retains the best qualities of a private Victorian collection. The museum houses collections of fossils as well as Neolithic, Bronze Age and Roman artefacts such as lead pigs and there is also some fragile statuary from the West Front of Wells Cathedral.
