This section helps promote a select few local craft based businesses including our own. I am very grateful to a number of photographers, Tony Howell, Lynne Newton and Chris Abbott, who have supplied so many of their wonderful pictures for this website. They all live in this area and know it well.

Black Dog of Wells

Black Dog of Wells, Tor Street, Wells, BA5 2US, Tel: 01749 672548

The name Black Dog of Wells was adopted in 1984, for the part of our business that started making the small decorative terracotta tiles. This work is widely recognised in our region and further afield in the USA, Canada and Australia. Our unique wall plaques are based on historical quotes or phrases and visual references. They are suitable for both indoor and outdoor decor.
We also make stone cast products largely based on statuary associated with Wells Cathedral. Philippa Threlfall, the artist behind this work was already creating large public and private works in the form of ceramic panels. These are made up of ceramic pieces that may have been treated with oxides, glazes or glass coupled with natural stone to form large pictures some of which measured up to 72 feet in length. You can find examples of our different types of work on our website link below.
We have compiled a city circuit walk that tells you a little bit about the special features along the route and it also takes you right past our shop! Just click on the Moat Walk link below. (1.75Mb PDF file)

Tony Howell is one of England's best-known landscape photographers, and is based in Burnham on Sea, Somerset. His style is instantly recognisable - simple, uncluttered compositions and an overall sense of peace and stillness borne out of his deep love of the land.
His images have been used in countless books, calendars, magazines, on BBC TV, in a Hollywood Movie (The Number 23 starring Jim Carrey, 2007), billboards, brochures, catalogues, greeting cards, posters, postcards, websites, national newspapers, fleets of vans and much more.
Tony's clients include The BBC, Christies, Royal Mail, The Tate, The National Trust, Penguin Books, Unicef, The Forestry Commission, and many more.

Foxybiddy - Lynne Newton - Photography

2 Buttercup Lane, Street, Somerset, BA16 0PJ, Tel: 01458 446373

Lynne has a passion for photography, which can be seen in all of the images she has kindly provided for our website. Despite busy family life she will get up at 4-5am and go to some of her favourite photo spots in the hope of capturing the spirit of Glastonbury Tor and the enchantment of the Somerset Levels. Living in Street she is ideally placed to explore new angles on the themes she loves the most - the Tor and nature.
Lynne is fascinated about the flocks of starlings that migrate here during the winter months. This is an exciting time as she never knows what her camera has captured until she analyses the pictures at home. In October 2007, "A Murmuration of Starlings" photograph had won her first prize in category in the Currys/Telegraph Our Lives photo competition and this award gave her national news coverage which no doubt has helped increase the number of visitors wanting to watch this spectacle.
During the starling season she runs a log on her website letting people know where they can spot them. Her images can be bought online from her website shown below.

Chris has enjoyed photography for over 25 years and the passion has never stopped growing. He spends as much time as possible in the field whilst maintaining a balanced work and family life.
His father was a keen photographer and with a steady stream of cameras, photographic magazines and books available, Chris found much inspiration which has helped him to this day. He particularly enjoys landscapes and he now carefully plans his photographic excursions to get the best from the natural lighting conditions.
A number of the images he has kindly donated to our site can be bought online from his website shown below.
