Information about travelling to the City has been compiled by Black Dog of Wells. The Wells & North Somerset Touring Map shows all the routes by road and rail as well as locations for train stations and Bristol Airport. Wells can not be reached by water unless there is very heavy flooding on the Somerset Levels!
We endeavour to keep up with changing timetables but we urge you to check the websites associated with each entry for the most accurate and up to date information.
If you are planning to travel to this beautiful part of Somerset we hope you have a safe journey whatever your mode of transport and we look forward to seeing you.

By Car

The car is probably the most favoured mode of transport for reaching Wells. Our main roads connect us to the M5 motorway to the west, north to Bristol/Bath, east to Salisbury/London and south to Weymouth and the coast. Wells has just one fuel station but there are a number of others in the surrounding towns. Our Wells City Map shows the locations of Car Parks, the fuel station and one way streets to help you navigate around the town.
The Automobile Association's Route Planner may be of some help for planning your journey to Wells. It provides maps and detailed information for your routes. It can be found on the left side of the page under Travel & Leisure.

By Local Bus service

Wells is quite well connected by local buses which regularly run between Wells and the towns of Bristol, Bath, Weston-Super-Mare, Shepton Mallet and Glastonbury.
The document link below takes you to a Wells Bus Map on the First Group website. Schedules and routes may change throughout the year so please check their website for any changes that may have been made recently.

By National Coach service

National Express is a long distance bus service and is ideal if coming from further afield as they are fast and do not stop in many places along a route. The NX403 is a direct link between Central London/Heathrow to Street via Wells. There are no changes of coach on this route.

By Train

There are no trains that stop in Wells but our nearest station is Castle Cary which can be found in the lower right corner of our Wells & North Somerset Touring Map, about 15 miles from Wells. There is a good distribution of trains throughout the day stopping at Cary. There is no direct bus service to Wells from the station. You would need to get to Shepton Mallet first and then (No. 161/162) to Wells. The document link below takes you to a Shepton Mallet Bus Map on the First Group website. Schedules and routes may change throughout the year so please check their website for any changes that may have been made recently. Trains and local buses do not necessarily coincide.

Bristol Airport is our local international airport. On our Wells & North Somerset Touring Map you can find it at the top of the map about 20 miles north of Wells.
Bristol Airport has flights to many destinations within the UK and continental Europe. In 2005 services were started to the USA via Continental Airlines but this service will end on the 6th November 2010.
The easiest way to reach Wells from here is to catch an airport taxi unless someone can meet you there. For those who would like to hire their own transport the airport has a number of car hire companies, Avis, Europcar, Hertz and National Car.
There are no direct buses to Wells from the airport but there are two options: If you can get to Weston-Super-Mare you can catch No. 126 to Wells or take the Airport Express coach into Bristol and then change onto a local bus No. 376. The document link below takes you to a North Somerset Bus Map on the First Group website.
For more comprehensive information about airport connections see the Bristol Airport website below.

For those who have some serious energy to burn we are located on the National Cycle Network. National Route 3 runs between Bristol and Padstow in Cornwall via Wells. To give you a basic idea of the route we have managed to dig out a route overview flyer from the Sustrans website, current as of January 2010. (See West country Way Route 3 below 1.5Mb). Once in Wells you can explore the enchanting Somerset Levels and Mendips with additional cycle route information from the Mendip Hills website www.mendiphillsaonb.org.uk
